Bonjour! Means HELLO is English. This is the main language on the Island. French, Creole and English are widely spoken. (Some people even understand Afrikaans, thanks to all the South African’s visiting the Island!)
With its diverse cultures and religions, Islam making up 80% of the religions practiced; imagine what the food is like! A dish for every taste bud!
The island is only 1865km with 330 kilometres of coastline with white sandy beaches! So be sure to pack in your bathing costumes!

Upon arrival at SSR international Airport in Mauritius after a 4 hour long flight from Or Tambo), the Global Travel Alliance SA (GTASA) group was welcomed by Connections Team. A Local tour operating company in Mauritius; whom I will recommend to any traveller. After a short drive we arrived at our first destination… Heritage Le Telfair – located on the South Coast of the Island. This is a 5 star resort catering to all your desires! Dinner served on crisp white tablecloths with a menu to die for!
Day two arrived bright, early and humid with rain in the air. But that didn’t stop us for the fun but tiring day ahead! Amazing Race in Mauritius! We were split into groups and given golf carts! I can safely say they can go faster than 20kms per hour! This was the best way to learn and see all three properties on the 2000hectors of pure Heritage resort. Finding clues at Heritage Awali to finding tropical fruit at Heritage Le Telfair to getting lost at Heritage Private Villas! At least we know the battery on the Golf carts last for more than an hour! This was the perfect way to see and experience the resort. Lunch was served later than normal with our toes in the sand and fresh cocktails on the beach… Moms and Dads, take your kids along. Every hotel/resort has a kids club open from 08h00 till 20h00 at no additional cost!
Day three arrived too bright and early. We departed after a delicious breakfast and drove up to the area known as Black River. If you do nothing else on the Island, this is an extremely highly recommended activity! Fun Adventures – SEAKART! Not a jetski (banned in Mauritius) and neither a speedboat! A bit of both! Fun and safe for the whole family! No time for drinks – off to our next hotel – Veranda Resorts Grand Baie Hotel and Spa! Three star hotel with a lot of character . Greeted with the local Saga Dance and drinks. Ideal hotel for families who likes the pleasures of seaside and the hustle and bustle of Grand Bay Village of the North. Ideal for shopping, nightlife and sailing boats. After a tasteful lunch and hotel inspection as well as a musical show by the locals we rushed of to our next destination. Veranda Resorts – Paul and Virginie Hotel and Spa. Three star hotel ideal for honeymooners. Wellness Spa, tennis courts – you name it. Intimate and private, a refuge away from worldly cares….
Day four. Choppy seas onboard a catamaran! Worth the sailing to Gabriel Island. Sun tanning and snorkelling! What a perfect day! Blue skies, white sand and crystal clear water! Who could ask for more? BBQ lunch served onboard – fresh blue marlin with reggae music playing in the back ground… island style! After a fun sun filled day, back to the hotel for dinner! What a life!
Day five – don’t want to go home tomorrow! Check out and en route to our next hotel… SHOPPING IN GRAND BAY!!! After spending all our money on key rings, bags and sarongs, we made our way to our next Verande Resort. After removing our shoes (no shoe policy), we went on a hotel inspection. Only one night?! No way! We should have stayed here from the start! Close to the village of Grand Bay and yet not to far away to enjoy the tranquil setting of this hotel with its sandy beach and perfect sunset… the chef brought out the big guns with a Gala seafood dinner of note! From crab to lobster soup to crayfish and red snapper fish… mmmmm! Bon Appetite! The Last Supper! No sleep for us tonight – DJ pumping
some cool tunes in the bar!
Day six – oh no, going home today L 06h00 Is too early to leave from the hotel. After an hours drive we arrived at the airport and checked in for our flight home.
After five nights in Mauritius, I am definitely going back next year. It is a place of such peace. Service is a pleasure in Mauritius and freely offered with a smile. The Island is layed back and no need for a watch only when meals are served. I wish to thank Global Travel Alliance South Africa for affording me the opportunity to experience Mauritius! It is a MUST DO for everyone! Whether you are a couple looking for a romantic getaway or a family looking for a fun filled holiday. There is a resort or hotel to suit your needs in Mauritius.
